A Fire Rated Acoustic Sliding Door for Back of House

Architect: HGA Architects
Acoustician: Arup
Contractor: JE Dunn

Summary: A three year historic renovation in 2011, of the Northrop Auditorium originally built in 1929. Clark Door was sought out particularly, to provide a fire rated and acoustic sliding door for backstage.

The renovation was designed to upgrade the venue in look and improve acoustics. The results are a world class performance hall.

This $88 million dollar project was a complete renovation to update and improve this well known performance hall.

The new design reduced the width of the auditorium for sound quality and actually reduced seating from 4,850 to 2,700.  The new facility includes the 168 seat best buy theater and two new loading docks.

At the recommendation of ARUP Acoustics in NYC, HGA Architects contacted Clark Door at the start of the project in 2011. Clark was able to eliminate the need for two doors, by providing two hour NFPA 252 fire rating and STC 51 performance in one door leaf.

  • CDL provided two hour NFPA fire rating and STC 51 performance in one door system. This changed the original plan of two doors at this one opening and provided cost savings.
  • The CDL engineers met the challenge of low headroom space by creating a low headroom track system.
  • CDL had the door tested to two hour NFPA 252 standard.
